The NFL combine is set to take place this week, and the health status of Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson was updated ahead of his throwing session.
NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported that Simpson was dealing with a “severe” case of gastritis during the final weeks of the latest college football season. Pelissero said that Simpson’s weight dropped to the 190s by the Rose Bowl, but he is back to 215 pounds now.
Simpson also dealt with a bulging disc in his back and bursitis in his elbow, according to On3’s Chris Low. Despite these struggles, Simpson will have a clean slate ahead of the 2026 NFL Draft.
As the consensus No. 2 quarterback in the 2026 class, Simpson has elected to throw at the NFL combine, and it probably is a good idea for him to do this after dealing with all the health-related issues he’s battled.
Simpson finished the 2025 season with 3,567 yards, 28 touchdowns and five picks. It’s difficult to predict where Simpson will be drafted, but a team to pay attention to is the New York Jets. The Jets have two first-round picks, and the belief is that the Jets will take a non-quarterback with their No. 2 overall selection and try to get Simpson later in the draft, but the Pittsburgh Steelers are another team in need of a quarterback that could snatch up Simpson before the first round is over.
