The University of Alabama’s Athletic Director Greg Byrne feels the SEC Championship game has run its course in college football.
This statement comes on the heels of an expanded College Football Playoff and an expanded SEC regular-season schedule.
The game traditionally puts the top two teams in the SEC against one another in Atlanta after the regular season. Byrne feels an end should come to the annual game.
“I think the ship has sailed,” Byrne said in an interview with USA Today. “It’s run its course.”
The Crimson Tide lost to Georgia in the 2025 SEC Championship game, but both teams still made the College Football Playoff.
While Byrne still feels the event is a wonderful one, doing away with it seems like reality to him.
“It’s a great event,” Byrne said. “I don’t like the idea of it going away, but I think it’s reality, with an expanded playoff.”
