On Friday, Alabama football stepped foot on Saban-Field at Bryant-Denny Stadium for the first time this spring, and head coach Kalen DeBoer gave an update on how the Crimson Tide’s wide receiver room is progressing this spring.
For NC State transfer wide receiver Noah Rogers, today was the first time he’s stepped foot on Saban-Field, and DeBoer labeled him as the wide receiver that “stood out the most” in Alabama’s second scrimmage.
“Noah’s been consistent,” DeBoer said. “He had a couple of nice catches, some big plays. Thought he was there when he needed to. Even just sometimes short ones where you got to move the chains. Maybe it’s not just a complete natural catch. He’d probably be the one that stood out the most.”
After discussing Rogers, DeBoer turned his attention to the Crimson Tide’s returning superstar Ryan Coleman-Williams and the other players in the wide receiver room.
“Ryan had a great scrimmage last week,” DeBoer said. “Derek Meadows has had some big plays throughout the whole spring. Didn’t have really as many plays today, and then Lotzeir [Brooks] continued to do the same things that you saw him doing in the second half of the season. He’s a part of the offense, so he’s a very versatile guy, can do things both down the field and short.”
All three of the players DeBoer listed after Rogers are returning players, and they’ve each had their moments throughout the spring. With Germie Bernard going to the NFL and Isaiah Horton becoming a Texas A&M Aggie this offseason, there is room for players to step up and grab a prominent role in the Alabama offense at the wide receiver position.
Fans know what Coleman-Williams is capable of when he’s at his best, and last season, Brooks showed what he can do in this current Alabama system. Meadows is a guy that has an opportunity to take a leap this spring and get more opportunities when fall rolls around.
It is a good sign to hear that Rogers is doing the things that DeBoer envisioned he would do for Alabama, and if he keeps being the consistent pass catcher that DeBoer has seen him be in these spring scrimmages, Rogers could end up being one of the best investments the Crimson Tide made in the offseason.
Fans will get a chance to watch Alabama football’s wide receivers this Saturday as A-Day returns to a scrimmage format.
