Alabama football positioning itself to take advantage of groundbreaking in-state 2028 recruiting class

Alabama football has an opportunity to take advantage of one of the most talent-rich recruiting classes in Alabama high school football history in the near future.

The state’s 2028 class has elite talent at multiple positions on both sides of the football. The Tide is already starting to take advantage of the class by picking up recent early commitments from four-star quarterback Kingston Preyear out of Alexander City, Alabama, and linebacker Ryquan Butler out of Loachapoka, Alabama.

Alabama’s 2027 recruiting class is expected to be small, and as a result, the Tide will not sign a big in-state class. All signs point to this being a result of Kalen DeBoer’s staff feeling as if they will continue to retain their roster well. Another reason the Tide could be taking this route is how talented the 2028 in-state recruiting class is.

Alabama has already offered several 2028 in-state prospects.

Elite recruits lead the state’s impressive group of talent. Nehemiah McCary is one of those recruits, and the linebacker has five-star potential written all over him. At 6-foot-3 and 235 pounds, he is built like and moves like what college football coaches are prioritizing at linebacker in today’s era. It is no secret why teams like Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Michigan, Georgia and others are salivating over the Maplesville product.

Kaleb Ballard is another major 2028 talent residing in the state. The best way to describe the 6-foot-5 athlete is as an offensive weapon because he could be a five-star at either wide receiver or tight end in the future. Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Georgia, LSU and several others are expected to take hard swings at Ballard.

Lee Steele is another impressive tight end prospect in Alabama as a member of the 2028 recruiting class. At 6-foot-6, it is hard to miss Steele on the field for Orange Beach. He shines more as a receiving threat at this stage in his development. Alabama, Auburn, LSU, Tennessee and many other teams look as if they will try their very best to land Steele.

Joey Fleming, Samuel Bailey, Christian Bennett and Braylon Jackson make up an impressive offensive line class the Tide is targeting in the 2028 class. All four have spoken highly of the Tide in the past. Bailey and Fleming will likely push for five-star status, but there is a lot to like about Jackson and Bennett as well.

Three in-state 2028 wide receivers report offers from Alabama. Dedrick Kimbrough, Darryl Blackman and Kylen Johnson make up this group. Alabama is likely to be a factor in each of their recruitments.

Keoni Snipes is more of an edge/defensive lineman prospect. He earned an Alabama offer during the spring. At 6-foot-6 and 250 pounds, Snipes makes plays while lined up at different positions across the Saraland defensive front. He displays strength at the point of attack and has the potential to be a disruptive force at a multitude of spots at the next level.

Zion Coger, a four-star running back out of Jasper, earned an Alabama offer at camp last month, and he said the offer means a lot. The 5-foot-11, 190-pounder is one of the most complete running back prospects in the 2028 class, with his blend of size, explosiveness and vision. The talented back knows how to find green grass and make defenders miss when he has the football in his hands.

CJ Craig-James is a top safety prospect out of Parker High School in Alabama, and he has not been shy about identifying Alabama as one of his top schools. At 6-foot-3, Craig-James is a long safety who hovers around the backend of the Parker defense with great anticipation skills and impressive closing speed on the football field. He is known as a physical defensive back, and he wants there to be no doubt about his speed going forward.

There are still multiple other in-state recruits to know who have not earned Alabama offers just yet. Jamari Nicks (Winterboro), Reginald Ward (Williamson), CJ Davis (Spain Park), Barrett Price (Spain Park) and Eli King (Thompson) are just a few of those players to know.
