Keelon Russell looks to be growing up fast as a starting quarterback for the Alabama Crimson Tide.

Russell is in his first year as a starter, and his play is continuing to trend upwards after four games in the role. The former five-star is set to lead Alabama in their first top-25 matchup of the season Saturday against Mississippi State.

The quarterback has grown in more ways than one this season. However, the biggest change Alabama wide receiver Rico Scott has seen in Russell is him becoming more of a vocal leader.

“I would say being more vocal,” Scott said. “Kentucky, people thought he had a bad first half. We didn’t really think any of us played that well in the first half. He pretty much stayed vocal. That is just who he is.”

Russell has never been described as lacking confidence. Before he got to campus after signing with Alabama, he was telling whoever would listen he had plans to start right away in Tuscaloosa. While that did not happen due to Ty Simpson taking over the role, Scott feels the experience Russell has gained this season is paying off while his confidence remains intact.

“Experience is great for anybody,” Scott told reporters. “I mean, he plays the hardest position in any sport. But I didn’t see the confidence change.”

A lot of eyes will be on the quarterback this weekend when Alabama takes on Mississippi State. Kickoff for the top-25 matchup is set for 11 a.m. Kickoff is set for ABC.
