The Alabama Crimson Tide’s defensive depth is being tested, and DaShawn Jones’ value could be increasing.
Jones stepped up for Alabama in relief of DeVonta Smith after Smith was sidelined with an injury versus LSU. Jones’ impact was felt as he went on to play 29 total snaps and finished with a season-high three tackles and half a sack in Alabama’s victory over LSU. He met with the media on Tuesday after practice to discuss his transition from Wake Forest.
“At Wake (Forest), we played quarters, but here it’s a lot of man, and it’s a lot of competition here, especially in the SEC,” Jones said. “It’s pretty good. I’ve been liking it a lot. I’m getting comfortable with it. You know, taking each rep, taking it day by day and it’s still a transition I have to make but I’m still working on it.”
Jones then went on to explain the biggest difference in his acclimation process as he now transitions to the “Husky” role along the backend of the Crimson Tide secondary after normally lining up outside at his cornerback position.
“I would say the at Husky position, you’re in the box more and I make a lot of more tackles than I do on the outside,” Jones said, priding himself on this aspect.
Alabama will now need Jones to continue making an impact for the duration of the season when called upon, as the Crimson Tide battle injuries and continue to retool their secondary.
