The Cheez It Citrus Bowl decided to take South Carolina over Alabama and several other SEC schools on Sunday.
The Crimson Tide were selected by the ReliaQuest Bowl to take on Michigan after the Gamecocks were chosen. South Carolina’s head coach Shane Beamer feels this was a ‘statement’ decision.
“They chose us, and that’s a strong statement,” Beamer said. “After the playoff teams, the Cheez It Citrus bowl gets their choice of an SEC team. There’s a lot of SEC teams out there, a lot of them that are ranked that aren’t in the playoff. For them to say we want the South Carolina Gamecocks is huge. It’s just an awesome statement and can’t thank them enough. And that’s what I would say to them is thank you for the opportunity to come down there and compete in Orlando.”
Alabama defeated South Carolina and was ranked ahead of the Gamecocks in the final College Football Playoff Rankings.
