TCU quarterback Trevone Boykin and LSU running back Leonard Fournette both seemed to have this year’s Heisman Trophy sown up, but competition for both stiffened last week.
Boykin had a rough outing against Oklahoma State, tossing one touchdown and four interceptions in a 29-49 loss. He now stands on the outside looking in, despite throwing for 445 yards. Fournette entered Bryant-Denny Stadium averaging 25 carries and 193.14 rushing yards per game. He was made a non-factor, totaling 31 yards with a touchdown on 19 carries.
Alabama running back Derrick Henry has emerged as the new frontrunner for the Heisman Trophy after his performance against LSU. The junior totaled 210 yards with three touchdowns on 38 carries in a 30-16 win over the Tigers.
Henry has accounted for 100 rushing yards in four of the last five games, dating back to Alabama’s meeting with Georgia.
He is currently tied with former Southeastern Conference quarterback Tim Tebow (Florida) for the most consecutive games with a rushing touchdown, 14 games. Henry and Alabama will face Mississippi State this weekend.
