Ryan Grubb excited to reunite with Austin Mack: ‘I know that he can process the offense’

Ryan Grubb is pumped about the opportunity to coach Austin Mack again at Alabama.

Mack played under Grubb as a freshman at Washington during the 2023 season. The new Alabama offensive coordinator also played a significant role in getting Mack to join the Huskies as a 17-year-old.

Media members asked Grubb about the reunion on Wednesday.

“He’s got a big upside, obviously,” Grubb said. “I thought he really had done a great job working on his technique, throwing motion, things like that. I can tell he been working hard over the last year. But he’s a very bright kid. I know that he can process the offense. He came into our system really, really young, 17-year-old freshman and kind of the thought there was when we got Austin to Washington was that he would have six months with Michael Penix and kind of see how it’s supposed to be done. And I certainly think he’s gravitated to that and it looks like he’s matured a lot and excited to be with him.”

Mack, Ty Simpson and Keelon Russell are battling for the title of QB1 this spring, and the competition is likely to carry over to fall camp.
