As Nick Saban and Alabama football take to Bryant-Denny Stadium for its second scrimmage today, yours truly of Touchdown Alabama Magazine breaks down five important things to watch for.

1. Bryce Young

After missing the first scrimmage and having a decent performance in the first game-like practice, this is the true freshman's final opportunity in fall camp to show Coach Saban that he needs to be looked at as the starting quarterback.

He brings a lot of talent and playmaking abilities to the team, but Young must lock in and play his game.

2. Continuity along the O-Line

We know what Alex Leatherwood, Evan Neal, Landon Dickerson and Deonte Brown are capable of. All four guys have played a lot of football together, and one can also throw Chris Owens in with the group too. This scrimmage is about the others that need to build continuity with the offensive line, including Pierce Quick, Darrian Dalcourt, Amari Kight, Tanner Bowles, Tommy Brown, Emil Ekiyor Jr., Damieon George and Javion Cohen.

In the event that a player or group of players contract the Coronavirus during the season, Saban wants to be able to go to his bench and play individuals that are ready to provide a winning football mentality.

3. An emergence of a marquee tight end

Alabama fans want everyone on its team to be a threat, and that includes the tight end position. It saw greatness with O.J. Howard and Irv Smith Jr., but who is the next in line?

The Crimson Tide will figure it out today, as Miller Forristall, Jahleel Billingsley, Cameron Latu, Carl Tucker and Major Tennison will battle it out. To have a strong pass-catching tight end emerge among this group of receivers is huge for Alabama.

4. Defensive Line/Secondary play

Phidarian Mathis, a redshirt junior, spoke with local reporters on Thursday and talked on how the young defensive line for Alabama needs to grow. Despite Mathis and LaBryan Ray being the leaders, players like DJ Dale, Christian Barmore, Justin Eboigbe and Byron Young got their first taste of action in 2019.

After not having a great run defense and not providing a consistent pass rush last year, Freddie Roach has brought new energy to the front and the group wants to be aggressive.

How much will it be able to pressure the pocket will be an important factor?

When it comes to the secondary, a battle between true freshmen Brian Branch and Malachi Moore is going on at nickel (star).

The best performer from the scrimmage will win the role.

5. Competition at punter

This race, in particular, is obviously a weird one.

Many people believed that Ty Perine's performance from last season should qualify him as the starter; however, Saban wants competition at every position. At punter, the race is between Perine, Skyler DeLong, Charlie Scott (younger brother of JK Scott) and Sam Johnson. Even Will Reichard is involved as an emergency punter, though Saban wants to keep him at kicker.

Whichever one can consistently flip the field the best will win the contest.
