Bears sign undrafted rookie Brandon Greene, places Eric Kush on injury reserve

Who remembers Brandon Greene’s 24-yard catch versus LSU in 2014?

It was the biggest play of his career, as the reception helped Alabama defeat the Tigers 20-13 in overtime at Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge, La. Despite being recruited at offensive tackle in the Crimson Tide’s 2012 signing class, the native Georgian lined up at tight end, offensive line and defensive line through 54 career games.

After being a part of four Southeastern Conference championship teams and two national title squads in 2012 and 2015, Greene has now been presented with a chance at the National Football League – despite going undrafted in this year’s event.

Head coach John Fox and the Chicago Bears signed Greene on Monday, following an injury to fifth-year veteran Eric Kush (injury reserve). Before sustaining a medical mishap, Kush opened lanes for Jordan Howard to total 1,313 rushing yards and six touchdowns on 252 carries in 2016.

The 6-foot-5, 295-pound lineman was primarily used as a blocking tight end throughout his tenure. He created rushing lanes for five 1,000-yard backs, including 2,219 yards rushing from Derrick Henry in 2015. Henry would also turn in 28 touchdowns and went on to win the Heisman Trophy for that season.

Greene now joins former Alabama safety and fourth-round pick, Eddie Jackson as both intend on helping the Bears improve offensively and defensively.
