Kalen DeBoer provides health update on Alabama punter

Alabama football’s head coach Kalen DeBoer provided an update on the health of freshman punter, Alex Asparuhov, at the Regions Golf Tournament on Wednesday.

“Alex will be cleared,” DeBoer said. “That’s the expectation there. I think probably from our standpoint we wanted to make sure that we had a couple different options and you know him not having the level of training, the level of work that you’d have if you were healthy all through the spring and summer. That was just something that we wanted to make sure we guarded against.”

Asparuhov was sidelined this spring after suffering an injury during his senior year of high school.

The California native fits the mold of what Alabama’s looking for in its next punter and should be in the mix to earn the starting spot this fall.

“He’s really coming along,” said DeBoer. “He’s an athlete. He’s a strong, strong kid. Seems like his recovery process has gone well, so we expect him to be cleared and be a part of the competition.”

Asparuhov’s father Asen was a placekicker at Fresno State from 2000 to 2003. He was named a semifinalist for the Lou Groza Award in 2002. The award is presented annually to the top placekicker in college football.

Clearly, the specialist lineage runs deep in the Asparuhov family. Alex will look to find his own success at the college level at Alabama. With Alabama losing starting punter James Burnip to the NFL, there is a chance that Asparuhov earns playing time as a true freshman.

Asparuhov was regarded as the No. 3 punter in the country, according to Kohl’s Kicking Camps.
