Alabama OC labels 234-pound running back as a workhorse

Alabama Running Back Daniel Hill (4) in action against A-Day at Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa, AL on Saturday, Apr 11, 2026.

Alabama offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb met with reporters on Monday, and he labeled this Crimson Tide running back as the “workhorse” of the group.

Grubb said that 234-pound running back Daniel Hill transformed his body this offseason and continues to increase his knowledge and maturity.

“Daniel Hill, you know, if I was picking guys that have had a lot of growth on this football team, Daniel would be one of the biggest ones just not only physically how he’s transformed his body, but just also his maturity, his understanding of preparation, schematically, his knowledge.” Grubb said. “You just hear him lining guys up. Intelligent football player. He’s put a lot of work in to being one of our workhorses.”

Hill weighed 244 pounds last season, and he is currently listed at 234 pounds on Alabama’s roster. The Mississippi native is looking to get more touches in 2026, and it sounds he is carving out a bigger role for himself this season.

In 2025, Hill did not see the field that often early on because he was nursing an injury, but his playing time increased after a solid showing in the Missouri game where he caught a touchdown pass. His best performance was at home versus Oklahoma. Hill ran for 60 yards and two touchdowns and caught five balls for 37 yards.

This offseason, Hill dropped 10 pounds in preparation for the new season. A leaner version of Hill could make him lighter on his feet and make him more explosive.

Grubb labeled Hill as a guy that could be a workhorse for Alabama football. With running backs AK Dear and EJ Crowell missing time due to injury, Hill could be on his way to becoming the lead running back for the Crimson Tide on Saturdays.

Fall camp will continue tomorrow. Alabama football is getting closer and closer to having their depth chart set for the Sept. 5 home opener against East Carolina.
