Alabama running back Derrick Henry becomes the second Crimson Tide player (Minkah Fitzpatrick, Oct. 18) this year to be awarded with national player of the week honors, via the Walter Camp Football Foundation.
Henry earned offensive player of the week status, after totaling 271 rushing yards and a touchdown on a school-record 46 carries in Alabama’s 29-13 win over Auburn last week. He surpassed former Tide standout Trent Richardson in rushing yards (1,797) and touchdowns (22) in a single season. Henry’s four 200-yard rushing performances tie him with Southeastern Conference legends Bo Jackson and Herschel Walker.
Henry is averaging 149.75 rushing yards per game, an output that surpasses one of Alabama great Bobby Humphrey. He averaged 133.7 yards (school-record) in the 1986 season. Henry is up for a Heisman Trophy.
Alabama will battle Florida next week in Atlanta for a Southeastern Conference title.
