Nick Saban and Bear Bryant top ESPN’s 150 greatest coaches list

With college football celebrating its 150th season in 2019, ESPN has decided to roll out a number of lists ranking the greatest players and coaches at their respective positions. On Tuesday the top 150 coaches were revealed and to little surprise two Alabama greats in Paul “Bear” Bryant and Nick Saban finished at the top two spots.

Coming in at number two was current Alabama head coach Nick Saban who has helmed one of the greatest dynasties the sport has ever seen. He has won a total of five national championships in Tuscaloosa and one while he was with LSU. Saban has an overall record of 242-65-1 while coaching at Toledo, Michigan State, LSU and Alabama. When only looking at Alabama Saban has a record of 151-23 and will continue to add to his already impressive resume.

At number one is the man who is some people’s eyes will never be eclipsed as the best coach in the history of college football in Bear Bryant. Bryant who also coached at Maryland, Kentucky and Texas A&M had possibly the greatest run of success next to Saban in all of college football lore. What made Bryant’s run so impressive was his ability to adapt and win in multiple different eras.

Although Saban is doing the same right now, Bryant was among the first to win multiple championships in multiple decades with multiple cycles of players. And do so dominantly. Bryant’s career record was 323-85-17 placing him eighth on the all-time wins list.

Coming in as the 123rd best coach was former 1992 national champion Gene Stallings who coached the Crimson Tide from 1990-96. Stallings won a single national title in his time at Alabama but is still beloved  and held in high regard by the fan base
