At the end of his performance at Alabama football’s Pro Day, NFL Draft prospect Deontae Lawson spoke with the media and chatted about what it’s like meeting with scouts, coaches and general managers from NFL teams in the middle of NFL Draft season.

Within the group of Alabama local media members that cover the Crimson Tide, Lawson is regarded as one of the players that give the most insightful answers in media availabilities, so it was intriguing to get his answer on this topic.

“I think it just varies with position or person, but usually it’s just a background check at the beginning, then maybe they install a play and have you coach it back to them or show some of your film or just try to coach you up and show you how they’ll use you for their scheme or what techniques they’ll teach you,” Lawson said. “Like I said, it just varies from every person and every team.”

One of the things that players will have to do when they reach the NFL is adapt to the environment, and the players get a taste of that in the meetings as they are learning how teams would use them, what formations or schemes are used by each team and so forth.

Lawson believes that his ability to adapt is one of the top traits and feels like he can adapt no matter who drafts him.

“I feel like that’s one of my best traits, just being able to adapt to any circumstance, any condition I’ve dealt with growing up or just anything,” Lawson said. “I would be happy to get out of Alabama for once, but I feel like I would adapt easy. I feel like I’m always watching. I’m always observing, so I feel like that’s one of my best traits.”

For Lawson, he does not have a list of desired landing spots in his head, but he said he’s leaning on his faith and keeping a good mindset ahead of the draft, which is shaping up to be one of the most unpredictable drafts in the last decade.
