Big remaining concerns for Alabama football as spring practice closes

Alabama football’s spring practice is set to come to an end Thursday on the campus of the University of Alabama.

This spring could be looked at as a success for the Crimson Tide for several reasons. The Tide now knows it has playmakers out wide at wide receiver, there is depth in a loaded tight-end room, the competition between Lorcan Quinn and Conor Talty at kicker should bring reliability to the kicking game, their quarterbacks can undoubtedly make the throws, there is proven depth on defense and likely a long list of other things the Alabama staff is excited about. However, there are still several big concerns surrounding the Tide.

Here is a look at three:

Rushing Attack

The Crimson Tide’s rushing attack fell off in a major way as the season progressed last fall. By the end of the year, it was nonexistent. While there are reasons to be optimistic about the Tide’s rushing attack following the spring, it remains a major area of concern with a first-year starting quarterback expected to lead Alabama’s offense in the fall. A-Day was filled with flashes by the Tide’s running back group, despite running the football traditionally not being a major part of spring games. Daniel Hill had a few nice runs, and his initial burst looked more explosive after he lost several pounds. AK Dear was impressive on a catch out of the backfield, and Trae’shawn Brown flashed an ability to be dangerous in space. Kevin Riley had better scrimmages before A-Day, and everyone is waiting on EJ Crowell to get healthy. All of those things are positive, but the Tide did not show anything this spring to believe they will for sure have a significantly better rushing attack than last season.
