Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn is pulling in every form of “good” luck he can find, including reaching out to Carolina Panthers’ quarterback Cameron “Cam” Newton.
Newton’s journey to the National Football League started at Florida, but he is most prolific and widely-known for his work at Auburn in 2010. Newton guided the Tigers to an undefeated 12-0 regular season, defeated Alabama in the Iron Bowl 28-27 and secured Auburn’s second national title in program history.
He has been asked by Malzahn to return to Jordan-Hare Stadium this weekend as an honorary coach. In doing so, Newton will do all he can to motivate this year’s team against Alabama.
It was in the 2010 Iron Bowl that Newton secured his status as a Heisman Trophy winner. This time around, the fifth-year NFL quarterback will try and encourage his alma mater to upset its in-state rival. CBS Sports will have the call at 2:30 p.m. (CT).
