Alabama’s J.C. Hassenauer named SEC Offensive Lineman of the Week

Alabama OL J.C. Hassenauer (No. 63) run blocking for Damien Harris versus Mercer on senior day at Bryant-Denny Stadium: Cedric Mason - Touchdown Alabama Magazine

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — He excelled in filling in for Ross Pierschbacher at left guard in Alabama’s comeback win over Mississippi State, and on last week, senior J.C. Hassenauer answered the bell again as he earned his first career start at home versus Mercer.

Hailing from Woodburry, Minn., Hassenauer did not allow a sack or a quarterback hurry while neither committing a penalty nor having a bad snap in the Tide’s 56-0 win over the Bears.

His performance in clearing the way for 530 yards on 60 plays – 265 passing, 265 rushing – earned him Offensive Lineman of the Week honors from the Southeastern Conference.

A former four-star recruit, Hassenauer graded out at 91 percent in 45 snaps.

He protected quarterbacks Jalen Hurts and Tua Tagovailoa, allowing the duo to account for six touchdown passes (three each) — the second-most in a game in school history. Before coming to Alabama, Hassenauer was one of the nation’s top center prospects in the 2014 recruiting cycle.

He was listed at No. 190 on the ESPN 300, and despite being one of the smallest guys up front, his soundest in technique and core strength, make it difficult for defenders to move him.

Should Pierschbacher (ankle) not be available this week against Auburn, look for Hassenauer to get the green light again. He was also an honoree for Offensive Player of the Week via the Tide’s coaching staff.
