Former Alabama QB slams fans for jumping off Ty Simpson bandwagon too soon

Since the loss to Florida State in Alabama’s season opener, Ty Simpson has played super-efficient football and led his team to blowout victories over ULM and Wisconsin.

In his first two home starts, Simpson has thrown for a combined 608 yards, seven touchdowns and 41 completions on 46 attempts, nearly doubling his Week 1 QBR in each game, respectively.

On the latest episode of The Dynasty: A Podcast on the Alabama Crimson Tide, Alabama legend AJ McCarron commented on Simpson’s performance over the last two weeks and called out the Tide fans who gave up on Simpson after his first start.

“I was high on this kid, myself and Trent [Richardson], especially talking about it leading up to the first game,” McCarron said. “I’ve thought for a long time that this kid is a baller, and it’s funny how many fans wanted to get on Ty and say the first game he didn’t play great and that it was his fault… There’s a lot of crickets out there now. I said be patient with him. He’s gonna be fine. Last two weeks I think has proven it. Have they played the top competition? No. Are turnovers going to happen throughout the season? Yes. You can see the kid can make every throw that’s needed on the field. He does a good job of using his feet when a play breaks down. He’s able to extend plays. The biggest thing is him being smart when he does extend plays. Don’t make a bad play worse.”

Simpson’s performance versus Florida State was not the main reason Alabama lost that game, as the Tide’s effort and energy levels were noticeably low across the board. Sure, Simpson made mistakes, but he threw for two touchdowns and 254 yards. However, noise arose on social media about if it was time to explore other starting quarterback options after one game, which McCarron thinks was an impatient mistake on the part of Alabama fans, considering what Simpson has done the last two weeks.

McCarron said he has been one of Simpson’s biggest supporters, adding that the Florida State game did not change his view on Simpson and his potential as a quarterback.

“Listen, I’m proud of Ty, McCarron said. “I think he’s done a hell of a job, and he’s never lost a supporter on this side. Some of the others watching this show need to jump back on the bandwagon because they were quick to jump off.”

Alabama is currently in a bye week, but the next time fans will see Simpson on the field will be next Saturday in Athens against the Georgia Bulldogs.
