The Oklahoma Sooners forced three turnovers in their victory over the Alabama Crimson Tide on Saturday.
Two of those turnovers came from quarterback Ty Simpson. His two turnovers performance extends his fumbling streak to five games and turnover streak to six.
Simpson commented on the team’s three-turnover performance against Oklahoma.
“They brought some stuff that we hadn’t seen before,” Simpson said. “I got to do a better job of taking caring of the ball. I think we all need to do a better job of taking care of the ball on offense because that’s what killed us. I don’t think they had any turnovers. We had three.”
Late in the first quarter, Simpson threw a pass right to Oklahoma’s Eli Bowen, and that interception was returned 87 yards to the end zone to put the Sooners up by 10 points.
The second turnover came on special teams as wideout Ryan Williams coughed up the football while returning a punt. That led to Oklahoma’s second touchdown of the day to make it 17-10.
Before the conclusion of the third quarter, Simpson had the football knocked out of his hands on a pass play, and Oklahoma recovered it, leading to the field goal that helped Oklahoma regain the lead.
With this being his fifth-straight game with a sack fumble, the first-year starter was asked what message DeBoer has for him in after those fumbles.
“Just get the ball out,” Simpson said. “Just throw it away. That’s about it.”
Alabama returns to action next Saturday and welcomes Eastern Illinois to Tuscaloosa. The Crimson Tide will look to bounce back and perhaps clean up the turnover issues.
