The Thompson Warriors continued their dominance over the 7A classification with a 48-10 win over Opelika Wednesday to secure their seventh football state championship.
The Thompson defense came out playing like a team on a mission against the Bulldogs.
The Warriors finished the first quarter, giving up only nine yards, and this was a precursor of what was to come. Opelika did not pick up its first first down until around the four-minute mark of the second quarter.
Thompson got the ball top open the game after Opelika won the coin tossed and elected to defer. The Warriors came out on fire on the ground and in the air on its first drive with RJ Evans exploding for 29 yards on the ground on the first play of the game. Opelika’s defense stiffened up in the red zone, and the Bulldogs were able to hold the Warriors’ to three points with an Ethan Black 27-yard field goal.
Opelika went three and out on its first drive of the game, but the Bulldogs’ defense was able to bow up again and hold the Warriors to three on the following drive after Thompson made it into Opelika territory. Black put in his second field goal of the game from 36 yards out to make the score 6-0.
Thompson’s defense was stifling when Opelika got the ball for the second time, forcing another three-and-out.
The third time proved to be a charm for the Warriors as they put their first touchdown on the board when Seaborn ripped the football to Trey Knight, extending the Warriors’ lead to 13-0.

The second half was quickly more of the same in the Warriors’ favor as Thompson’s Trenton McCorvey picked off Opelika’s Whit Cooper and returned the pick 22 yards for a score to give Thompson a 41-3 advantage. Evans punched in a three-yard score later in the third to go up 48-3.
Opelika got on the board with its first touchdown of the game late in the fourth with a Blake Johnson rushing touchdown.
Seaborn was the Warriors’ leading passer with 259 yards and three touchdowns. Evans led Thompson in rushing with 83 yards on 14 carries. Thompson’s defensive standouts included Chance Strown, Junior James and Trent McCorvey.
