After making a run to the Super Bowl the New England Patriots have decided to release linebacker Anfernee Jennings.
Jennings was one of the longest tenured members of the Patriots as he was drafted back in 2020 and played under Bill Belichick, Jerod Mayo and Mike Vrabel.
After scarcely seeing the field early in his career, as well as battling injury, Jennings morphed into a key rotational player for New England. Throughout his five year career with the franchise, Jennings appeared in 70 games with 40 starts totaling 217 total tackles, 7.5 sacks and 27 tackles for loss.
He was also named a team captain by Vrabel ahead of the AFC Championship Game against the Denver Broncos.
New England has recently began to reshape its defense specifically on the edge as the team signed Dre’Mont Jones to a three year $39.5 million contract. Jennings was entering the last year of his deal and his release frees up $3.8 million in cap space.
Prior to his time in the NFL, Jennings played four years under Nick Saban at Alabama where he helped the Crimson Tide win two national championships (2015, 2017). He was also named to the All-SEC first team in 2019.
