The Miami Dolphins announced its intention to release quarterback Tua Tagovailoa after the beginning of the new league year on June 1.
General manager Jon-Eric Sullivan released a statement announcing the decision to move on from Tagovailoa while also thanking him for his contributions.
“I recently informed Tua and his representation that we are going to move in a new direction at the quarterback position and will be releasing him after the start of the new league year,” Sullivan said. “As I shared with Tua, I have great respect for the person and player he is. On behalf of the Miami Dolphins, I expressed our gratitude for his many contributions, both on the field and in the community, during his six seasons in Miami.
“As we move forward, we will be focused on infusing competition across the roster and establishing a strong foundation for this team as we work towards building a sustained winner.”
Miami will be taking on a record $99.2 million in dead money which will be spread across two seasons.
Tagovailoa was benched for the final three games of the season in favor of rookie Quinn Ewers after throwing a career high 15 interceptions. Miami later fired head coach Mike McDaniel and brought in Jeff Hafley from the Green Bay Packers who will now be moving in a new direction.
After being selected with the fifth overall pick in the 2020 NFL draft following a historic career at Alabama, Tagovailoa struggled in his first two seasons with the franchise. But once Miami hired McDaniel, Tagovailoa’s career took a different trajectory as he conducted the dolphins to the sixth best offense in the league while throwing for 3,548 yards and 25 touchdowns in 2022.
In 2023, Tagovailoa led the NFL in passing yards with 4,624 yards and 29 touchdowns while playing in all 18 of Miami’s games.
Unfortunately, injuries have played a major factor throughout Tagovailoa’s career suffering multiple concussions on top of his major hip surgery before being drafted.
Tagovailoa will now have an opportunity to start fresh with a different team to try and restart his career once again.
